Quebec: Montreal – Day 1
{To read about our time in Quebec City, you can read Part 1 and Part 2.}
We pretty much only spent 2 full days in Montreal although we had a brief evening there as well at the beginning of the weekend. Peter’s grandparents live in Montreal so we stopped in to see them and had a lovely time together! I love grandparents. They’re so full of stories and they’ve reached the point where they just say whatever they think without worrying about it. I love it!
We met up with my parents, and we all stayed right downtown by Catherine St. It’s really the place to be. It’s where everything comes alive at night and where there are tons of shops, restaurants, etc.
On the first day we walked all the way down to Old Montreal, which probably took 45 minutes or so. Not a bad walk, and a fantastic way to start the day!
Once we were there we followed a couple of online do-it-yourself walking tours of the area making sure to stop by and see some of the famous locations. We didn’t often stop and pay to go in, but just seeing some of the historic buildings was quite nice!
I love, love, love Montreal. I could live here in a heartbeat…but again, those pesky frigid winters make me think twice!!
We wandered around enjoying gelato (cookie dough flavour for me!), and popping in and out of shops until we found ourselves in the main “square” of Old Montreal. It was like a postcard straight out of France! So lovely.
We listened to some street musicians and wandered around debating on where to eat lunch. We had spied a great place, but it turned out to be closed. Nevertheless, we found Montreal Poutine and it was perfect! They had a great back patio in the shade (for which were ever so grateful) and a lovely little menu that appealed to all of us.
I ordered the 3 cheese grilled cheese (brie, bleu cheese and mozzarella) with a side salad and fries. The other 3 ordered poutines along with the chicken and cheese grilled cheese. They seemed to like theirs as much as I liked mine! We were all definitely full but quite happy with our little find. It seems to be a popular place as they also sell t-shirts that say “I {heart} Poutine”! My parents bought one for my grandmother, who, truly does love poutine!
We debated what to do with our evening and through much discussion and a few phone calls, we decided to book tickets to see “Wicked” the musical. I can’t even fully express to you just how ECSTATIC I was!!!!!
I had waited 7 looooong years to see this, and I was sooo pumped. It had just opened in Montreal so we had no trouble getting tickets. It totally lived up to my expectations and it was so wonderful. We all thoroughly enjoyed it!
I went to bed absolutely pumped up from having seen the musical, but also with the knowledge that I was going to be doing a foodie tour the next day… seriously, does it get any better??? You’ll have to wait and see how that tour went! I’ll fill you in on it all tomorrow. But just two examples as a hint of what’s to come: duck sausage + pickled fiddleheads.
